Caroline Colianne is our October athlete of the month. She was chosen because of her dedication to Special Olympics and because of her great showing at the National Special Olympic competition this summer.
How did you first get involved in Special Olympics?
I started doing Track and Field in high school, and then after high school I wanted to continue with track, so my dad reached out to Leonard with Evanston Special Recreation, and he helped me get involved with the Track and Field program. Eventually he got me into swimming and basketball as well.
This summer you traveled to New Jersey to swim in the Special Olympics. What events did you swim and how did you place?
I swam the 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 100m IM and the 4x50m medley relay. I won gold medals in the medley relay and in the backstroke, a silver medal in the 100m freestyle, and a bronze medal in the 100m IM.
What is your favorite event to swim?
The 100m IM.
What is your favorite Special Olympics memory?
I love the Swim meet that is held at Northwestern every year.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I really enjoy all of the Northwestern coaches and I’m glad that you guys are all back from summer vacation.
